Viki Hirst

NERC Knowledge Exchange Fellow

Viki started working with water@leeds on 1st April 2011 and her work focuses on knowledge exchange related to
the Water Framework Directive.

On 17th January water@leeds held an Expert Forum for Practitioners Implementing the WFD in Leeds.
For more information about this event, along with presentations please click here.

The aim of the Fellowship is to build partnerships between water@leeds and business (including policy communities) to support the UK in delivering the Water Framework Directive.

This will involve looking at previous and existing research from a WFD perspective and translating this for businesses in a format and language that they can use. Also building partnerships to examine and determine what further research would be beneficial for end users so that water@leeds and NERC funding will be focussed on these priorities in the future.

Three key areas of work are planned around
- rural land use and agriculture
- diffuse urban pollution
- physical modification of waterbodies

Initial support for this fellowship comes from the Environment Agency, Natural England and Yorkshire Water although many others will benefit and be involved. The fellowship is for a period of 3 years, and Viki will be working 60% of her time on this.
